Convex, linear and phased arrays emit and receive ultrasound through different arrangements of elements. Those arrangements influence the shape of the displayed field, the contact area and the frequencies commonly used. No geometry is universally superior; each supports a different combination of depth, detail and acoustic access.
Convex: broad and depth-oriented
A convex array has a curved footprint and produces a widening field beneath the probe. Lower-frequency convex configurations are commonly considered for compatible abdominal, pelvic and obstetric applications where penetration and a broad view are priorities. The curved contact surface and larger field should be evaluated against the anatomy and available acoustic window.
Linear: rectangular and detail-oriented
A linear array produces a rectangular field and is commonly used for compatible vessels, vascular access, lung surface, MSK, small parts and superficial anatomy. Wider footprints provide more context; compact footprints can improve access. Higher-frequency linear options increase near-field detail while reducing the practical depth range.
Phased: compact access with a sector view
A phased array uses a smaller footprint to create a sector-shaped field that expands with depth. This geometry is commonly associated with compatible focused cardiac imaging and other applications where the acoustic window is limited. Confirm the supported modes, presets and measurements for the exact probe and software configuration.
