Start by separating the standards from the systems.
DICOM is a standard for formatting and exchanging medical imaging information. PACS stores and distributes imaging studies. The electronic medical record provides the broader patient record and may display images, reports or links received through an interface. A handheld system may participate in these workflows, but the exact path depends on its application and the destination environment.
Define what the probe application can produce
Confirm whether the selected configuration exports still images, clips, DICOM objects or other files, and which patient and study fields are included. Features can vary by model, software version and market. A generic statement that a system is DICOM-capable is not enough to confirm compatibility with a specific PACS, worklist, archive or reporting process.
Map the route into PACS and the EMR
Document each step from patient selection and acquisition through transfer, storage, review and final record availability. Identify whether files move directly, through a gateway or by another approved workflow. Confirm destination addresses, ports, identifiers, patient matching, study descriptions and whether a report or image link must be returned to the EMR.
Complete security and operational validation
Local IT should review authentication, encryption, network segmentation, mobile-device management, access control, auditability, retention and recovery. Test the workflow with non-patient or approved test data before deployment. Define how failures are detected and reconciled so an image is not assumed to be in the clinical record when transfer has not completed.
