There is no single best probe for every service.

A useful comparison begins with the examinations and procedures the team performs most often. Broad point-of-care programs may value multi-array coverage; focused services may benefit from a dedicated convex or linear configuration. Purchase price and headline specifications matter, but they should follow—not replace—the definition of clinical need and workflow.

Translate clinical questions into array geometry

Convex arrays support a broad curved field for compatible deeper abdominal and obstetric work. Linear arrays provide a rectangular view for vessels, procedures, lung surface, MSK and superficial structures. Phased arrays create a sector-shaped field through a smaller contact area for compatible focused cardiac applications. A multi-array system can cover several priorities in one handheld configuration.

Use frequency, depth and footprint as a system

Frequency influences the balance between near-field detail and penetration. Depth specifications describe the available range, not guaranteed image quality at every setting. Footprint affects contact area, access and field width. Compare all three against the actual anatomy, patient population and scanning approach rather than selecting whichever number appears largest or smallest.

Evaluate the workflow beyond the probe

Confirm supported phones and tablets, operating systems, application version, imaging modes, measurements, battery process, cleaning, accessories, file export and PACS or EMR requirements. Ask for the locally applicable instructions and regulatory status. A portable probe is only ready for deployment when the display, network, documentation and governance are ready as well.
