Musculoskeletal work can span larger muscle groups, tendons, joints and extremely superficial structures. A general linear probe may provide versatile coverage, while higher-frequency and smaller-footprint options can prioritize near-field detail or controlled access. Selection should begin with the structures and procedures encountered most often.

Balance detail, penetration and field of view

Higher frequencies generally improve detail near the surface while reducing practical penetration. A wider linear footprint can display more anatomy in one view; a compact footprint can fit around smaller or less accessible areas. Compare these factors with the service’s patient population, common examination depths and need for dynamic assessment or compatible procedural guidance.

Evaluate ergonomics in the real care setting

Wireless operation changes how the operator positions the probe and display. Test the phone or tablet location, viewing angle, one- or two-person workflow, gloves, cases and cleaning process. Consider whether a larger tablet is preferable for shared review or whether a phone better supports movement between rooms and clinics.

Keep claims and records tied to the approved configuration

Confirm the locally approved applications, available imaging modes, measurement tools and documentation options for the exact model and software version. Clinical education should use verified examples with clear acquisition context. Representative marketing imagery must not be treated as evidence of diagnostic performance.
